Bragato Research Institute (New Zealand)

This initiative is a part of the Sauvignon Blanc 2.0 (SB2.0) programme, which aims to develop new Sauvignon Blanc clones to support the New Zealand wine industry in adapting to a changing environment. At Bragato Research Institute, we employ the Blackbird high-throughput imaging robot to swiftly screen for powdery and downy mildew resistance by imaging inoculated leaf discs from approximately 10,000 unique clones generated through somaclonal variation. In addition to supporting SB2.0, the Blackbird plays a vital role in our broader breeding programme, significantly accelerating the development of disease-resistant varieties. The robot’s machine learning–based image analysis allows us to quantify infection levels on up to 1,500 leaf discs per day, dramatically increasing our phenotyping capacity compared to traditional manual microscopy.
